Public facilitation training is coming back to Salina.  Everyone interested in enhancing facilitation skills is invited to register  for  an upcoming training titled "A Catalyst to Community Conversations"  on Saturday, April 27 at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E Beloit Ave.

The Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy at K-State will provide the training which is sponsored by a grant from the Kansas Volunteer Commission and hosted by TALK Salina and Central Kansas District Extension.  The event will start at 9:00 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Lunch is provided.

Everyone who has attended a former training event is invited to attend at 3:15 p.m. for a review and refresher session.

Participants will receive practical training for facilitation and convening a community deliberation event utilizing the National Issues Forum Model.

When completed, you will take away a fuller understanding of technical and complex decisions and stages of decisions, and an overview of different facilitation models as they apply to stages.

Following the training, participants can utilize facilitation skills in their professional lives and also volunteer as roundtable facilitators for future periodic community deliberations. TALK Salina has hosted local and national discussions which have had a ripple effect in the community on issues like Immigration, Mental Illness, Safety and Violence, the local Jail and Early Childhood Development.

There is a fee of $25 for the general public and $5 for students who are also welcome to attend. Registration is limited. Please register by April 22.

MISSION: Fostering cultural and ethnic inclusions through education, awareness and support.

TALK Salina hosted a March 2018 deliberation on the topic of Immigration. "Coming to America. Who Should We Welcome? What Should We Do?"

A second event was held in Lincoln County with the same number of attendees.

Following the Salina event, several suggestions were offered. This resulted in the formation of One Salina, a group of nearly 50 citizens:

What Should We Do? Suggestions for Action in Salina

  1. Consider the creation of a community group/committee or organization to support action.

  2. Help people feel welcomed. Intentionally reach out to immigrants in the community.

  3. Consider developing an Outreach Office/Center for this purpose.

  4. Develop and host an International Festival for the community.

  5. Develop a mentoring program for immigrants like Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

  6. Organize and publish an international cooking recipe book by bringing women and men together to share recipes from around the world.

  7. There are several local resources that could collaborate to help people when they reach out. Create a resource list.

  8. Offer culture enrichment classes for education or sharing of stories.

  9. Develop a program to support the Circles program that offers support to families needing financial support, or application for citizenship. Is it possible to families in the community to sponsor and mentor immigrant families, or work through Circles?

One Salina has participated in a host of events
